In previous NIE pages we took you through reading and writing using the newspaper, we showed you how to read for information and how to write your own newspaper article. Rather than repeating similar activities, we now want to show you how it’s possible to teach classroom grammar within the pages of a newspaper.

Take a look at cartoons in this week’s supplement.

So, what is a cartoon?

Cartoons are forms of illustrations that carry different messages and meanings. There are different types of cartoons:

Editorial cartoons, also called political cartoons, are a visual commentary on current events and politics. They can be humorous but are more satirical (mocking, sarcastic), and may communicate the political viewpoint of the cartoonist or add depth to an editorial opinion article in the newspaper.

Gag cartoons consist of a single panel – and usually make fun of types or classes of people rather than individuals.

A comic strip, or comic, is a sequence of cartoons that tells a story. Comics usually recount the lives of regular characters. Each comic strip may be a self-contained episode, or it may be a continuing story.

Download the supplement to get cracking on this editions set of activities all about cartoons.

A newspaper is full of pages with stories, photographs and pictures. Often the pictures go with the stories, but sometimes the pictures are advertisements, or ads.

Advertisements make up a big part of a newspaper and pay for the cost of printing and producing newspapers. Ads sell things. The ads scattered throughout the newspaper are called display ads. They usually have pictures, graphics or photographs to go with them, and can be any size.
