The Sunday Times storybook initiative

In May 2009 the Sunday Times storybook initiative was launched. Readers were asked send an SMS to donate to raise funds for the books.

From November 2009 to March 2010 a staggering 650 000 storybooks were donated to 5 200 primary schools nationally.

The storybook has 10 stories written and illustrated by South Africans. The English book has also been translated into Sesotho, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa and Afrikaans.

YOU CAN ALSO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND HELP CHILDREN TO READ.

You can buy 2 storybooks in any of the languages above for R30 and we will donate 4 storybooks to a school on your behalf – the money will be deposited into the Sunday Times Readers’ Charity Account and will be used to publish the storybook in IsiNdebele, Sepedi, Venda, Setswana, Siswati and Tsonga later this year.

Paul Gwambe is this weeks winner, he lives in Orlando West, he is 14 years old and in Grade 7. He would like to become a fashion designer or an architect one day. As an architect, he would design buildings that would not collapse during an earthquake. As a fashion designer, he would design modern cultural clothes to help people remember their roots.

This edition of ReadRight includes letters sent in by the readers, amazing competitions and giveaways. There’s also a soccer themed classroom activity and story.

Read all the great letters from the readers. There’s great givaways from the animated movie “Igor” as well as from Kelloggs Coco Pops, plus a Rockz Club competition.

This week’s activity is aimed at the Foundation Phase and focuses on the concept of division. Children are encouraged to solve practical problems in this soccer themed classroom activity.

The story in this week’s supplement is also soccer themed. It is called “Sidima’s Goal” by Polly Maxwell and Jean Fullalove.

“Sidima’s Goal” is about a young boy who learned soccer skills by watching the older boys and girls play. Sidima practiced and trained hard to achieve his dream of one day playing and scoring a goal for an important soccer team. There are great classroom activities at the end of the story.
