Dear Educators
Welcome back to your second term! We hope you had a very restful holiday and would like to tell you about the
projects we have been working on for the Sunday Times and Sowetan for this term.
Sunday Times – Career Quest
During this term we will be distributing 500 000 free copies of the Sunday Times to over 2 000 schools around South Africa. PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR YOUR FREE COPIES! Inside you will find Career Quest – targeted specifically at your Grade 9 classes. As you are well aware, over a million Grade 9 learners will be making crucial subject choices for Grades 10-12. Their subject choices will affect how they fulfill their dreams of a decent tertiary education and a prosperous career. Career Quest will provide essential information and advice on a wide range of job sectors and specifically areas where there are scarce skills. The 32-page supplement covers 12 crucial employment sectors and includes interviews with over 30 people working in those sectors. Every sector lists employment categories, subjects to choose in Grade 10, tertiary institutions to study at and advice on how to get bursaries and grants to study at universities and colleges.
Sunday Times – ReadRight
ReadRight continues to publish the Sunday Times storybook initiative, in partnership with publishers Oxford University Press, Maskew Millar Longman and Macmillan, the project supports the National Department of Education’s (DoE) Foundations for Learning campaign to improve the reading and writing skills of children in Grades R-6. All 22 cut-outand- keep storybooks are published with advice and tips for parents and teachers on how to help children with their reading. We urge you to get parents involved and to collect these valuable storybooks for your school. ReadRight is an insert in the Sunday Times Magazine (published during term times) and is targeted at children between the ages of six and 14; learners can SMS ROCKZ and their details to 32545 to become a member of the ROCKZ Club.
