Karate is Raihaana Ismail’s passion. She is in the advanced class and helps to teach karate to children less fortunate than herself. She helps learners access information for their school projects and the aged with their shopping, as well as serving the poor and needy in soup kitchens. Stray animals are also her concern. Says Raihaana: “I love my environment, and I collect old newspapers, plastic bottles and containers, and give them to people who can use them. I love socialising and working with people.” Her main aims are to recycle as much waste as possible, help the less fortunate and target young people to take up karate rather than getting involved in drugs, alcoholism and crime.
Saarah Asmal, 10, of Woodstock, Cape Town, works with a group called Ammie Draai Hiking Friends, which does wonderful work for the community. “Every Sunday we go hiking, and each hiker gives a small donation. Once the donations reach R3 000, the money is given to a hospital, orphanage or home for the aged. Our mission is to help all the hospitals and care homes so that this world can become a better place for us all. We work together as a team, and I enjoy doing it.”
